    Additional COVID-19 Security Considerations

From Abby Snyder, Vice President of Risk Management

It is not uncommon for cyber criminals to attempt to take advantage of situations that foster uncertainty, such as COVID-19, by conducting email phishing attacks and spreading disinformation. We encourage you to avoid clicking on links and opening attachments in unsolicited emails, and to turn to trusted resources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization, and other public health authorities for information.

Refrain from providing your account and credit card numbers, and other personal information over the phone, via email, text message, or the internet unless you initiate the communication with a known, reputable party. Most legitimate businesses will never contact you and request your personal or bank information.

Use caution when making online purchases or donations. Go directly to a web site by typing in the web address in your browser as opposed to clicking on a link in an e-mail because doing so may lead to a fake site.  Requests for donations in the form of cash, gift card, or wire transfer are often scams and should be carefully vetted and limited to trusted organizations and known individuals.

Many scams target the elderly.  Check in on the people you care for and pay attention to suspicious behavior such as unexpected large purchases, unexpected withdrawals from bank accounts, opening or closing accounts or credit cards, or hiding bank statements.

    Other Scam Examples:

    Stimulus Check Scam

We are already seeing examples of Covid-19 and stimulus payment related fraud in the news. Legitimate stimulus checks are not yet being sent (as of 3/31/20), but when they are, please be cautious when receiving such checks. If you are unsure of a check’s legitimacy, please ask your banker.

    Family Treatment Scam

There is scam targeting the elderly where they receive a call claiming that a family member has Covid-19, and the elderly person needs to send money for treatment. If you or a family member receive such as call, do not send money or provide the caller with any personal information in response to this type of request.

Update 6.2.20

Beginning Wednesday, June 10, all Mechanics Bank office lobbies will resume regular business hours and lobby access will no longer be limited to appointment only.

We have been preparing to provide a safe, secure environment for our employees and customers and believe everything necessary is in place to ensure we protect one another while complying with government and CDC recommendations. As a reminder, remote banking options including drive-thrus, ATMs, Online and Mobile Banking are all available for your convenience.

We will continue to post any service updates at mymechanics.com/coronavirus.

Update 3.25.20

To our valued customers:

We are working diligently to provide you with safe and efficient banking services during these unusual times.  Thank you for your understanding and patience as we strive to serve you during the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.  Even with the temporary closure of banking office lobbies, our nine offices continue to serve the needs of customers without interruption.

Mechanics’ drive-thru service lanes are open to assist you during business hours.  Our offices in Shelby and on Free Road that do not have drive-thru lanes are offering walk-up service to customers during regular business hours as well.  Please refer to the Locations page on MyMechanics.com or call our Answer Center at 419-524-BANK for the hours of our locations.  If you have a time-sensitive need to meet with a banker or to access your safe deposit box, please call your preferred branch office or banker directly or our Answer Center to make an appointment.  Appointment request forms are also available on MyMechanics.com.

You are also encouraged to consider ATMs, Online and Mobile Banking offerings for 24/7 remote access to account information.  Additional services including bill pay, mobile check deposit, and online account opening (limited accounts) are available as well.

For most customers, there is no need to withdraw large amounts of cash.  Cash will continue to be available as you need it, through our banking offices and ATMs.  As always, the safest place to keep your money is in an account at an FDIC-insured financial institution.

At Mechanics, people come first.  The health and safety of our customers, staff, and community remain our top priority.  We continue to use all CDC recommended precautions for the prevention of spreading the COVID-19 virus.

We realize and are sensitive to the challenges, financial and otherwise, this pandemic has thrust upon our customers and our community.  Our bankers are listeners first; please communicate with them about your challenges.  They will assist you in any way possible.  It is particularly important to talk to us if you anticipate a problem making a loan payment or overdrawing your checking account.  There are measures we can take to assist you and lessen the impact of the issues caused by the pandemic.

At Mechanics, we do not treat customer relationships with a “one size fits all” approach.  Each relationship has its unique characteristics, and we tailor solutions to your particular set of circumstances.  Whether you are a long-time customer or new to Mechanics, an individual or business customer, please do not hesitate to contact us.  We promise to listen and care!

Please be aware that cyber-criminals do not take a vacation, and they prey on the vulnerable.  These criminals look for ways to gain access to your private and confidential information.  Mechanics Bank will never ask our customers to provide full social security numbers, account numbers, or online banking passwords by phone, email, or text.  Also, beware of fraudulent email messages which may contain links or attachments that could introduce viruses into your computer.  If you are unsure if a phone call or message is legitimate or someone is pushing you to make a hasty decision, it is good practice to contact the organization in question at a known and trusted phone number or another point of contact.  Do not contact them using the information contained in the suspicious message.

Please be safe and let us know how we can be of service to you.  Thank you for the trust you have placed in Mechanics Bank.

Sincerely,

Mark Masters
President & CEO

A message to our customers about COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

At Mechanics, people come first. The health and safety of our customers, staff, and community remain our top priority. In light of the evolving COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation, we want to assure you that we have been monitoring the situation and working to implement precautionary measures to best protect our customers and staff. These include professional cleaning and more frequent disinfection of all office locations, common public surfaces, signature pads, and ATMs. Employees also have access to gloves for cash handling and are encouraged to utilize sick-leave when appropriate and follow CDC recommendations for prevention.

We understand the concern and uncertainty you may be experiencing at this time and remain committed to serving you the best that we can as the situation evolves. Lobbies remain open to serve you, but as limiting person-to-person contact becomes increasingly recommended by government and health officials, we invite you to consider using our Drive Thrus and digital banking services for simple transactions to provide extra safety.

Online and Mobile Banking offers 24/7 remote access to account information as well as additional services including bill pay, mobile check deposit, and online account opening (limited accounts). If you are not currently enrolled to use Online Banking you can sign up now, or feel welcome to contact our Answer Center at 419-524-BANK where they can provide additional recommendations and support.

We are not only a community bank, we are this community’s bank. Please know we are here to help those who have been impacted and reach out to discuss how we might be of assistance. We will continue to monitor information and developments of COVID-19 and keep MyMechanics.com/coronavirus updated with the latest information.
